(BCSNN) — Katin Houser threw for 300 yards and two long touchdowns to Anthony Smith as East Carolina defeated Tulsa 41–27 on Thursday night at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.
The Pirates (4–3, 2–1 American) bounced back from last week’s loss at Tulane with their most complete performance of the season, racking up a season-high 568 total yards and committing no turnovers. ECU’s offense struck early with a pair of deep touchdown passes from Houser to Smith, energizing a “blackout” crowd on Night of the Boneyard.
Smith finished with career highs of 150 receiving yards and two touchdowns, including scoring plays of 66 and 63 yards. Houser completed 21-of-38 passes and connected with 10 different receivers, including a 30-yard strike to Brock Spalding.
ECU’s ground game added 268 rushing yards, led by London Montgomery’s career-best 125 yards on 16 carries. His 51-yard run following a fourth-down stop helped the Pirates take control in the third quarter. Marlon Gunn Jr. added 60 yards and a 1-yard touchdown, while T.J. Engleman Jr. tied career highs with 40 yards on 10 carries.
Defensively, ECU recorded five sacks and 10 tackles for loss while holding Tulsa (2–5, 0–4 American) to 6-of-19 on third down and stopping three fourth-down attempts. Preston Carr led the effort with five tackles, including a sack and a tackle for loss.
Tulsa quarterback Baylor Hayes threw for 251 yards and two touchdowns, both career highs, while tight end Brody Foley caught six passes for 126 yards and a score.
ECU closed out its Thursday night slate with a win and will look to build on the momentum heading into the final stretch of the season
