(BCSNN) — The Louisville Cardinals (5-1, 2-1 ACC) are the latest team to play spoiler and end an undefeated run, taking down the No. 2 Miami Hurricanes (5-1, 1-1 ACC) in Coral Gables, 24-21.
Louisville wasted no time asserting itself in Coral Gables, marching 75 yards on the opening drive before quarterback Miller Moss punched in a 1-yard score. Moments later, Moss found Chris Bell deep for a 35-yard touchdown, stunning the home crowd and giving the Cardinals a 14–0 lead. Miami responded with a short touchdown run from Mark Fletcher Jr., but the early damage was done—Louisville had landed the first blows.
"Now they couldn't run it as much, they had to throw a little bit more. We were able get after the quarterback, we were able to disguise things and all that tied in together," Louisville Head Coach Jeff Brohm said. "We haven't been able to do that a whole lot this year – get leads."
The Hurricanes clawed back with a pair of field goals from Carter Davis, narrowing the gap to 17–13 midway through the third. But every time Miami threatened, Louisville had an answer. Cooper Ranvier’s 48-yard field goal kept the Cardinals in front, and the defense held firm through Miami’s surges. The tension built as both teams traded possessions, each drive feeling heavier than the last.
Early in the fourth, Moss and Bell connected again—this time from 36 yards out—to stretch the lead to 11. Miami’s Malachi Toney broke free for a 12-yard touchdown and added a two-point conversion to make it a three-point game, but the Cardinals held on. Louisville’s early aggression and late poise delivered a 24–21 upset, shaking up the College Football Playoff picture and handing Miami its first loss of the season.
With a big road win in the books, the Cards return home to Louisville for another ACC contest, this time against the visiting Boston College Eagles inside L&N Federal Credit Union Stadium next Saturday. Meanwhile, Miami will remain at Hard Rock Stadium next Saturday, October 25 to face Stanford.
