(BCSNN) — No. 24 Arizona State will be without its top offensive weapon Saturday when the Sun Devils face Houston, as wide receiver Jordyn Tyson has been ruled out with a hamstring injury. Head coach Kenny Dillingham confirmed the news Wednesday, saying the decision was made to protect Tyson from further risk after he played through the injury in last week’s win over No. 14 Texas Tech.
Tyson continues to etch his name in Sun Devil lore after he suffered the injury in the third quarter of the 26–22 victory, but then returned to make a critical play on the game-winning drive. Facing fourth down, quarterback Sam Leavitt found Tyson for a 33-yard gain that set up Raleek Brown’s go-ahead touchdown run with 34 seconds remaining. Dillingham praised Tyson’s toughness, calling him “a competitor” and noting, “This is something where I’m trying to protect him from himself.”
Through seven games, Tyson leads the Big 12 in receptions (57) and receiving yards (628), ranking third and ninth nationally in those categories, respectively. He is also tied for second in the FBS with eight touchdown catches. The preseason All-American has emerged as a projected first-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft and has been instrumental in Arizona State’s 6–1 start.
Tyson’s absence will be a significant challenge for the Sun Devils’ offense, which has relied on his explosiveness and consistency. Arizona State will look to other playmakers to step up as they host Houston in a pivotal Big 12 matchup. No timeline has been provided for Tyson’s return.
Kickoff between Arizona State and Houston is set for Saturday at 7 p.m. CDT inside Mountain America Stadium.
