(BCSNN) — South Alabama football ended its six-game losing streak in dramatic fashion Thursday night, reclaiming the lead in the fourth quarter and sealing a 38-31 victory over Georgia State at Center Parc Stadium.
The Jaguars (2-6, 1-3 Sun Belt) exploded for 28 first-half points, then leaned on their defense and ground game late to secure their first win since Sept. 7.
Quarterback Bishop Davenport threw for a career-high 280 yards and accounted for three touchdowns, including a pair of first-quarter strikes to Brendan Jenkins and Jeremy Scott. Scott’s 74-yard score marked the longest offensive play of the season for South and helped the Jaguars build a 21-14 lead in a back-and-forth opening frame.
Kentrel Bullock added two rushing touchdowns, including the game-winner with 2:27 remaining, capping a six-play drive set up by Tirrell Johnson’s forced fumble and Jayvon Henderson’s recovery. Johnson later iced the game with an interception on Georgia State’s final possession.
South’s defense broke up seven passes and finished plus-two in turnover margin, while Wesley Miller and Johnson each set career highs in tackles with 11 and 10, respectively.
The Jaguars racked up a season-best 468 yards of total offense and converted 10-of-16 combined third and fourth downs. Davis Little tied the game at 31-31 with his first collegiate field goal midway through the fourth quarter.
South Alabama will return home to host Louisiana for its homecoming game on Saturday, Nov. 1. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. CT on ESPN+.
