(BCSNN) — Virginia Tech secured a dramatic 42–34 double-overtime victory over Cal on Friday night, with a game-ending defensive stand at Lane Stadium.
The Hokies (3–5, 2–2 ACC) jumped out to a 10–0 lead behind a 27-yard touchdown pass from Kyron Drones to Ayden Greene and a 46-yard field goal from John Love. Cal (5–3, 2–2) responded with 20 unanswered points before halftime.
Tech rallied in the second half, scoring three straight times through Love, Takye Heath and Drones, who accounted for five total touchdowns. After a late Cal score forced overtime, both teams traded touchdowns in the first extra frame.
In the second overtime, Drones found Heath again for the go-ahead score. Virginia Tech’s defense then forced four straight incompletions to seal the win.
Kemari Copeland recorded a career-high three sacks, while Marcellous Hawkins rushed for 100 yards. Heath’s 44-yard touchdown was the longest scoring play of the season for the Hokies.
