(BCSNN) — Redshirt freshman Drew Mestemaker shattered school and conference records with 608 passing yards Friday night, leading North Texas to a 54–20 comeback win over Charlotte.

The Mean Green (7–1, 3–1 American) trailed 17–7 midway through the second quarter before outscoring the 49ers 47–3 the rest of the way, including a 27–0 fourth quarter. Mestemaker completed 37 of 49 passes for four touchdowns, marking the second-most passing yards by a freshman in FBS history and the 16th-highest total all-time.

"I'm happy with the way we played tonight, but it wasn't all sunshine and rainbows at the beginning," said Mestemaker after the Mean Green's win. "We have to clean some stuff up. We have a really good Navy team coming to town next week, and we'll get ready to go 8-1."

Three UNT receivers topped 100 yards for the first time since 2007. Wyatt Young led the way with nine catches for 190 yards, followed by Cameron Dorner (117 yards) and Landon Sides (114 yards).

North Texas returns home to face Navy on Saturday, Nov. 1 at 11 a.m. CT at DATCU Stadium.
