(BCSNN) — LSU Athletics announced Sunday that it has parted ways with head football coach Brian Kelly, effective immediately. Associate head coach and running backs coach Frank Wilson will serve as interim head coach for the remainder of the 2025 season.

“When Coach Kelly arrived at LSU four years ago, we had high hopes that he would lead us to multiple SEC and national championships during his time in Baton Rouge,” said LSU Athletic Director Scott Woodward. “Ultimately, the success at the level that LSU demands simply did not materialize, and I made the decision to make a change after last night’s game. I am grateful for the ongoing consultations and support of the LSU Board of Supervisors and Interim President Matt Lee in this decision. We wish Coach Kelly and his family the very best in their future endeavors. We will continue to negotiate his separation and will work toward a path that is better for both parties.”

Kelly, who signed a 10-year, $95 million contract in November 2021, compiled a 34–14 record over four seasons with the Tigers, including a 19–10 mark in SEC play. LSU won three consecutive bowl games under his leadership and reached the SEC Championship Game in 2022.

The decision follows LSU’s 49–25 loss to No. 3 Texas A&M on Saturday, dropping the Tigers to 5–3 overall and 2–3 in conference play. Athletic Director Scott Woodward cited the program’s pursuit of excellence and unmet expectations as reasons for the change.

Kelly leaves as the winningest active coach in NCAA football with 323 career victories. He posted a 23–3 record at Tiger Stadium, including a 20–2 mark in night games. Prior to LSU, Kelly had posted a 34-6 record at Cincinnati and a 113-40 record at Notre Dame.

LSU’s buyout obligation is estimated at approximately $54 million, making it one of the largest in college football history.

Wilson, a former head coach at UTSA and McNeese State, will lead the Tigers through the remainder of the season as LSU begins its search for a new head coach.
