(BCSNN) — It happens every season when a high-profile job opens up. In 2025 however, a bunch of big time head coaching positions are available. So it should be no surprise that Urban Meyer’s name is surfacing once again in the college football coaching circles. And it looks like Penn State is among the programs considering the three-time national champion as a candidate.

Meyer, who last coached in college at Ohio State in 2018, has spent recent years as a lead analyst for FOX Sports and Big Ten Network’s “Big Noon Kickoff.” Despite a brief and turbulent stint in the NFL with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Meyer remains one of the most decorated coaches in college football history, boasting a 187–32 career record and national titles at both Florida and Ohio State.

Speculation intensified after Meyer was spotted meeting with Pennsylvania Senator Dave McCormick, prompting media figures like Craig Carton to suggest the visit was tied to Penn State’s coaching search. The Nittany Lions recently parted ways with James Franklin following three consecutive losses to Oregon, UCLA, and Northwestern — a move that reportedly carries a $75 million financial implication.

Meyer himself expressed surprise at Franklin’s dismissal, noting that such a decision likely signals Penn State already has a successor in mind. On his podcast “The Triple Option,” Meyer praised Penn State’s infrastructure and recruiting base, while also suggesting other candidates, including current UNLV head coach Dan Mullen.

“When you fire a coach that his record was 104-45, was in the Rose Bowl, the Peach Bowl, and was a score away from playing for a National Championship, and 16 days ago could possibly be the No. 1 team in the country — I don’t think you make that move, with a $75 million expense coming, unless you know who you’re going to hire,” said Meyer on his show.

Whether Meyer is seriously pursuing the Penn State job or simply influencing the conversation remains unclear. But with multiple Power Four programs now searching for new leadership, his name is expected to remain in the mix.
