(BCSNN) — Missouri State made history Wednesday night at Plaster Stadium, never trailing and riding two-touchdown nights from Shomari Lawrence and Jmariyae Robinson to a 28–21 win over FIU — the program’s first home victory over an FBS opponent.
The Bears (5–3, 3–1 CUSA) extended their win streak to three games and completed a perfect October for the second straight season. With the win, Missouri State moved within striking distance of Conference USA leaders Kennesaw State and Jacksonville State, both 4–0 in league play.
Lawrence, a former FIU running back, rushed for a season-high 104 yards and scored twice against his former team. Robinson hauled in six catches for 47 yards and two touchdowns, including a fourth-quarter score that gave the Bears a 28–14 cushion with just over eight minutes to play.
Quarterback Jacob Clark threw for 163 yards and two touchdowns, becoming Missouri State’s all-time leader in career passing touchdowns with 49. He also iced the game with a clutch seven-yard scramble on third-and-five to allow the Bears to run out the clock.
Defensively, Jalen Brooks led the way with 13 tackles, while the unit held FIU’s Kejon Owens — the nation’s No. 4 rusher — to just 63 yards on 18 carries. Missouri State forced two takeaways and held the Panthers (3–5, 1–3) to just one score on their first six second-half possessions.
The Bears return to action Nov. 8 at Liberty before hosting UTEP for homecoming on Nov. 15.
