(BCSNN) — No. 25 Memphis delivered a Halloween beatdown Friday night, racing past Rice 38–14 at Rice Stadium to improve to 8–1 overall and 4–1 in the American Conference. The win sets up a pivotal home matchup with Tulane next Friday in Memphis.
The Tigers scored touchdowns on four of their first five drives and extended their FBS-best streak to 48 consecutive games with 20+ points. Quarterback Brendon Lewis accounted for 312 total yards and a rushing touchdown, while Frank Peasant matched a career high with three short scoring runs.
Memphis built a 31–7 halftime lead behind a relentless defense that held Rice to negative two yards through the first 22 minutes and a season-low 212 total yards. The Owls entered the game averaging 226 rushing yards per contest — third-best in The American — but were held to just 112 on the ground.
Kamari Wilson forced a fumble that set up Peasant’s first touchdown, and Omarion Cooper added his first interception as a Tiger. Memphis finished with a season-high 11 tackles for loss and forced two turnovers.
Greg Desrosiers Jr. added a two-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, giving Memphis five rushing scores on the night. Lewis completed 18-of-22 passes for 225 yards and added 87 rushing yards before exiting early in the fourth.
With Peasant’s performance, Memphis became the only FBS team this season with four players who have at least six rushing touchdowns: Lewis, Peasant, Desrosiers Jr., and Sutton Smith.
Sam Brumfield led the defense with 12 tackles, followed by Wilson (11), Chris Bracy (10), and DeMarco Ward (10). The Tigers have now forced at least one turnover in 25 of their last 29 games.
