(BCSNN)— North Texas sophomore defensive back Quinton Hammonds was named the American Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Monday following his two-interception performance in a 31–17 win over previously unbeaten Navy at DATCU Stadium.

Hammonds, a native of Allen, Texas, recorded four tackles and picked off two passes — one in the third quarter that led to a Mean Green touchdown, and another in the final five minutes to seal UNT’s eighth win of the season. His first interception helped push North Texas’ season total to 90 points off turnovers, the second-most by the program since 2000.

Hammonds now ranks sixth on the team with 38 tackles and has added 4.0 tackles for loss, one sack, one forced fumble, and two interceptions on the year. He becomes the second UNT defender to earn weekly honors from the American this season, joining linebacker Shane Whitter, who was recognized after the team’s win over Washington State.

Freshman running back Caleb Hawkins also earned recognition, receiving Honorable Mention from the league after rushing for 197 yards and four touchdowns on 33 carries in the win over the Midshipmen.
