(BCSNN) — Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza led a game-winning 87-yard drive in the final two minutes, capped by Omar Cooper Jr.’s toe-tap touchdown catch, as the second-ranked Hoosiers stunned Penn State 27–24 on Saturday at Beaver Stadium.

The win marked Indiana’s first-ever victory in State College and tied the program record for best start to a season at 10–0 (7–0 Big Ten), keeping the Hoosiers a half-game ahead of Ohio State in the conference standings.

Trailing 24–20 with 1:51 remaining and no timeouts, Indiana started from its own 13-yard line after a sack. Mendoza connected with Cooper Jr. for 22 yards, E.J. Williams Jr. for 12, Riley Nowakowski for 29, Charlie Becker for 17, and finally Cooper Jr. again for the game-winning 7-yard score with 39 seconds left.

Cooper Jr. finished with six catches for 32 yards and the decisive touchdown. Becker, filling in for injured Elijah Sarratt, had a career-high seven receptions for 118 yards.

Mendoza overcame relentless pressure and a fourth-quarter interception to finish 19-of-30 for 218 yards, one touchdown, and one pick. He also ran for 20 yards, including an 18-yard score.

Linebacker Aiden Fisher returned from injury and made a major impact, recording nine tackles, a fumble recovery that led to a touchdown, and an interception that set up a field goal. Indiana built a 20–7 lead before Penn State responded with 17 unanswered points.

Nittany Lions quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer threw for 219 yards and a touchdown, but the Hoosiers’ defense made a crucial late stop to give the offense one final chance — and they delivered.
