(BCSNN) — California football announced Sunday that it has parted ways with Head Coach Justin Wilcox after nine seasons at the helm. General manager Ron Rivera confirmed the move, citing the need for new leadership as the program looks ahead.
“I want to thank Justin for all of his contributions to our football program, our athletic department and our university,” Rivera said in a statement. “He has always comported himself with class and professionalism. After careful consideration, we believe the time has come for new leadership. We wish Justin the best of luck in his future endeavors.”
Wilcox compiled a 48–55 record during his tenure, ranking sixth in program history in career wins. He guided the Golden Bears to five bowl appearances, including each of the past three seasons, and helped stabilize the program through multiple conference transitions.
Despite those accomplishments, Cal has struggled to consistently contend in the ACC, where the Bears currently compete. The decision reflects the administration’s desire to elevate the program’s trajectory as the college football landscape continues to evolve.
Senior offensive assistant Nick Rolovich will serve as interim head coach while the university conducts a national search for Wilcox’s permanent successor. Rolovich, a former head coach at Hawaii and Washington State, joined Cal’s staff earlier this year.
Wilcox’s departure marks the end of one of the longest head coaching tenures in recent Cal history. His emphasis on defensive identity and player development earned respect across the conference, even as results fluctuated.
Cal will now turn its attention to identifying the next Travers Family Head Football Coach, with Rivera emphasizing the importance of finding a leader capable of guiding the Bears into a new era. The only problem is, it's Cal. What good coach, that has skill, value, and ability, is going to want the job? The only hope is an up-and-comer that wants to prove themselves and is willing to coach a program known for being bad, having no history, and getting no support from the administration. What a dream gig.
