(BCSNN) - No. 5 Texas Tech captured its first Big 12 Championship in program history with a commanding 34–7 win over No. 11 BYU on Saturday at AmFirst Stadium, securing a spot in the College Football Playoff.
The Red Raiders (12–1, No. 4 CFP) leaned on a dominant defense and timely offense to overwhelm the Cougars (11–2). Linebacker Jacob Rodriguez led the charge with 13 tackles, while Ben Roberts overcame an early injury scare to record two second-half interceptions. Texas Tech forced four turnovers and held BYU to a season-low 200 total yards.
Quarterback Behren Morton threw two touchdown passes to Coy Eakin, including a spectacular 33-yard leaping grab in the second quarter that gave Tech the lead for good. Eakin added a 28-yard catch-and-run score in the fourth quarter. Kicker Stone Harrington contributed four field goals, continuing his strong season.
Roberts’ first interception set up Cameron Dickey’s 11-yard touchdown run on a direct snap, extending the lead to 21–7. His second pick in the fourth quarter sealed the victory. Roberts became the first player in Big 12 Championship history to record multiple interceptions in a game.
BYU struck first with a 90-yard drive capped by LJ Martin’s 10-yard touchdown run, but the Cougars managed only 24 yards before halftime and 110 the rest of the way. Martin, the Big 12’s rushing leader, was limited to 76 yards on 19 carries.
Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire praised his team’s resilience and hinted at a first-round CFP bye. “We’re looking forward to the bye. You know, we’re hoping and expecting that’s where we’ll be,” McGuire said.
The victory capped a breakthrough season for Tech, which has been part of all 30 Big 12 seasons but had never won the league title until now. The Red Raiders now await their CFP quarterfinal assignment, likely to be played Dec. 31 or Jan. 1, with the Cotton Bowl in Arlington among the possible destinations.
