(BCSNN) - Michigan football has parted ways with head coach Sherrone Moore after a university investigation found “credible evidence that Coach Moore engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member,” athletic director Warde Manuel confirmed Monday.

Moore, who succeeded Jim Harbaugh in 2024, compiled a 16–8 record in his full-time role. Biff Poggi will serve as interim head coach as the Wolverines prepare for the Citrus Bowl against Texas on Dec. 31.

Moore joined Michigan’s staff in 2018 as tight ends coach before rising to co-offensive coordinator in 2021. In 2023, he became the sole offensive coordinator and served as acting head coach during Harbaugh’s Big Ten suspensions tied to the sign-stealing scandal. Michigan went 3–0 under Moore in that stretch.

When Harbaugh departed for the Los Angeles Chargers in 2024, Moore was elevated to head coach. He guided the Wolverines to an 8–5 record in his first season, highlighted by a win over Ohio State in “The Game” and a bowl victory over Alabama.

In 2025, Michigan landed Five Star Plus+ quarterback Bryce Underwood, the nation’s No. 1 overall recruit, who earned the starting role as the Wolverines finished 9–3 (6–2 Big Ten). Moore missed two games due to suspension stemming from the sign-stealing investigation and received a two-year show cause penalty. Poggi filled in as acting head coach against Central Michigan and Nebraska, both Michigan wins.

The Wolverines carried a five-game win streak into their regular-season finale against Ohio State, but fell 27–9 in Ann Arbor in what became the most-watched game of the 2025 season.

Moore played offensive line at Oklahoma before beginning his coaching career at Louisville in 2009. He later coached at Central Michigan before joining Michigan in 2018.

Michigan now turns to Poggi to lead the team into the Citrus Bowl, where the Wolverines will face Texas on Dec. 31.
