(BCSNN) - Blake Horvath threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to Eli Heidenreich on fourth-and-goal with 6:32 remaining, lifting No. 22 Navy to a 17–16 comeback win over Army on Saturday.
Horvath overcame two turnovers, including a near-costly fumble at the goal line, to deliver the decisive score. After Heidenreich recovered the loose ball back at the 8-yard line, Horvath connected with his top target over the middle to put Navy ahead for good.
Army had one last chance, but after a review overturned a late fumble recovery, Alex Tecza converted a first down that allowed Navy (10–2) to kneel out the clock. The game ended with some post-play shoving before both teams joined in the traditional singing of the alma maters.
With President Donald Trump in attendance, Navy secured its second straight win in the rivalry and repeated as Commander-In-Chief’s Trophy champions. Army (6–6) has not beaten a ranked Navy team since 1955.
The game opened with matching 13-play, 75-yard touchdown drives. Horvath scored on a 5-yard run, and Army quarterback Cale Hellums answered with a 2-yard keeper. Army led 10–7 at halftime after Dawson Jones’ 45-yard field goal, set up by a Horvath fumble.
Jones added a career-long 48-yarder in the third quarter to extend the lead to 16–7. Navy responded with a field goal after Horvath’s 37-yard run, then capitalized on Phillip Hamilton’s interception to set up the winning drive.
Next Up:
Navy’s Wing-T offense, which entered the game with an FBS-high 10 plays of 60 yards or more, was largely contained, but Horvath and Tecza provided enough explosive plays to secure the victory.
Army will face UConn in the Fenway Bowl on Dec. 27, while Navy heads to the Liberty Bowl against Cincinnati on Jan. 2.
