(BCSNN) - Texas Tech announced Tuesday that it has reached contract extensions with four key members of its football staff: general manager James Blanchard, offensive coordinator Mack Leftwich, associate head coach and special teams coordinator Kenny Perry, and defensive coordinator Shiel Wood.
The deals push each contract through the 2028 season, with significant financial investments and revised buyout structures. Head coach Joey McGuire also agreed to a new seven-year contract earlier this month, just days before guiding the Red Raiders to their first Big 12 championship in school history.
“I appreciate Kirby Hocutt and our administration for proactively investing in the future of our football program,” McGuire said. “Our expectation is to compete annually for championships with this staff and the resources we have in place here at Texas Tech.”
Texas Tech (12–1) enters the College Football Playoff for the first time in program history, set to face either No. 5 Oregon or No. 12 James Madison in the Capital One Orange Bowl quarterfinal on New Year’s Day. The Red Raiders earned their spot with a dominant 34–7 win over BYU in the Big 12 title game.
The Red Raiders have been overwhelming this season, winning all 12 games by at least 20 points — a feat matched only by Alabama in 2018. Their 12 such victories are already a Big 12 record and one shy of Clemson’s FBS record set in 2018.
Texas Tech is the only team in the nation to rank in the top five in scoring offense (42.5), scoring defense (10.9), total offense (480.3 yards per game), and total defense (254.4 yards allowed per game). They also lead the FBS in takeaways (31) and rush defense (68.5 yards allowed per game).
Special teams have been equally impactful under Perry, with five blocked kicks this season and 14 over the past four years — the most in the Big 12 and among the top five nationally. Running back and returner J’Koby Williams is a Paul Hornung Award finalist, while kicker Stone Harrington is a Lou Groza semifinalist.
Perry has been with McGuire since 2022, helping Texas Tech to four straight bowl appearances and 25 Big 12 wins, the most in the league during that span. Leftwich and Wood are completing their first seasons on staff after arriving last offseason.
Kickoff for the Orange Bowl is set for 11 a.m. CT on Jan. 1, with coverage on ESPN and the Texas Tech Sports Network.
