(BCSNN) - Washington State closed a turbulent season with its most complete offensive performance of the year, piling up 628 total yards in a 34-21 win over Utah State in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl on Monday at Albertsons Stadium.

Quarterback Zevi Eckhaus threw for a season‑high 334 yards and three touchdowns, completing 26 of 44 passes while also tossing three interceptions. Despite the miscues, the Cougars (7-6) controlled the game from the opening quarter and secured their first postseason victory since the 2018 Alamo Bowl.

Running back Maxwell Woods added balance to the attack, rushing nine times for 117 yards to become the first Cougar to eclipse 100 yards on the ground this season.

The win came under interim head coach Jesse Bobbitt, Washington State’s defensive coordinator, who stepped in after the program’s third head‑coaching departure in as many years. Jimmy Rogers left for Iowa State after one season, following Jake Dickert’s move to Wake Forest. Newly hired head coach Kirby Moore - previously Missouri’s offensive coordinator - was in attendance.

Eckhaus opened the scoring with a 41‑yard touchdown strike to freshman Mackenzie Alleyne, who entered the game with just one career catch. Despite throwing interceptions on the next two drives, the Cougars’ defense held firm and kept Utah State (6-7) off the board.

Eckhaus extended the lead to 14-0 before halftime with a one‑yard touchdown pass to tight end Hudson Cedarland, who had only one career reception entering the game.

Kicker Dean Stevens added two short field goals in the third quarter to push the lead to 20-0 before Utah State quarterback Bryson Barnes scored on a two‑yard keeper to make it 20-7 entering the fourth.

Eckhaus responded with a 39‑yard touchdown pass to Landon Wright, one of 12 Cougar receivers to record a catch. Backup quarterback Julian Dugger later sealed the win with a 34‑yard touchdown run.

Barnes threw for 116 yards before exiting after a hard hit in the second half. Backup Jacob Conover completed 5 of 7 passes for 78 yards and two late touchdowns - a 21‑yard strike to Brady Boyd and a 26‑yard score to Javen Jacobs with 1:48 remaining.

The Cougars will return to a rebuilt Pac‑12 Conference next season alongside Utah State and Boise State, carrying momentum from their first bowl win in seven years.
