(BCSNN) - UTSA spotted FIU a 14-0 lead, then buried the Panthers under a 38‑point avalanche on the way to a 57-20 rout in the SERVPRO First Responder Bowl on Friday night at Gerald J. Ford Stadium. The Roadrunners closed the season at 7-6, securing their third straight bowl victory and their sixth consecutive winning season under head coach Jeff Traylor.

The night doubled as a record‑setting showcase. UTSA set new bowl marks for points (57), touchdowns (7), and passing yards (295), and the performance capped a season in which the Roadrunners posted the three highest‑scoring games in program history — 61 against Rice, 58 versus East Carolina, and now 57 against FIU.

Quarterback Owen McCown earned game MVP honors after completing 18 of 28 passes for 295 yards and three touchdowns, all program bowl records. He connected with seven different receivers, spreading the ball with ease as UTSA piled up 481 total yards.

Freshman running back Will Henderson III delivered a breakout performance, scoring three touchdowns — the most by a Roadrunner in a bowl game. He rushed for 59 yards and two scores and added a 40‑yard touchdown reception. Devin McCuin led the receiving corps with six catches for 73 yards and a touchdown, while Jamel Hardy Jr., Patrick Overmyer, and DJ Allen Jr. all contributed chunk plays.

UTSA’s defense was equally dominant after the shaky start, holding FIU to just 255 total yards and only 79 on the ground. The Roadrunners posted eight tackles for loss, three sacks, and forced two interceptions while limiting the Panthers to 1‑for‑10 on fourth‑down attempts.

Shad Banks Jr. led the defensive effort with eight tackles, a sack, a pass breakup, and two quarterback hurries. Jon Jones and James Walley Jr. added sacks, while Tyan Milton and Jimmy Wyrick each recorded interceptions.

FIU opened the game with a 73‑yard touchdown drive and added a 97‑yard punt return score to go up 14-0. But UTSA responded immediately. Henderson’s 2‑yard touchdown run and his 40‑yard catch‑and‑run tied the game at 14-14 late in the first quarter.

Wyrick’s interception on fourth down set up a Michael Petro field goal to give UTSA its first lead, and McCown’s 23‑yard strike to McCuin pushed the margin to 24-14. A’Marion Peterson’s 10‑yard touchdown run made it 31-14 at halftime.

Henderson added a 5‑yard touchdown run in the third quarter before FIU briefly halted the run with a 22‑yard touchdown. But even that backfired — Ahamad Chapman intercepted the two‑point attempt and returned it for two points, extending UTSA’s lead to 40-20.

McCown’s 34‑yard touchdown pass to Overmyer early in the fourth quarter broke the program’s bowl scoring record. Petro added a 36‑yard field goal, and Bryson Donnell capped the night with a 12‑yard touchdown run.

UTSA will open the 2026 season at home on Sept. 5 against UTRGV at the Alamodome.
