(BCSNN) — Florida State offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn announced his retirement Monday, ending a 35‑year coaching career. Head coach Mike Norvell elevated co‑offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach Tim Harris Jr. to offensive coordinator.
“After 35 years, it’s time for me to step away from coaching,” Malzahn said. “I want to thank Coach Norvell for giving me the opportunity to coach at such a prestigious program.”
Malzahn helped guide an offense that led the ACC in total offense and rushing offense in 2025. The Seminoles averaged 472.1 yards per game, ranking sixth nationally, and posted their highest rushing average since 1995. The season included nine 400‑yard games and back‑to‑back 700‑yard performances for the first time in school history.
Norvell thanked Malzahn for his work and expressed confidence in Harris. “He did a wonderful job coordinating our offense and calling plays in 2025,” Norvell said. “Coach Harris has a complete understanding of the offensive scheme.”
Norvell enters his 11th season as a head coach in 2026 with teams averaging 34.6 points per game. His offenses have produced top‑seven national rankings in both rushing and passing since 2016 and have generated 60 individual 100‑yard rushing games, 52 100‑yard receiving games and 26 300‑yard passing games.
Harris joined FSU in 2025 as pass game coordinator and wide receivers coach. Last season, he helped develop an offense that ranked in the top 15 nationally in total offense, rushing offense, third‑down efficiency and yards per completion. His group was led by first‑team All‑ACC receiver and Biletnikoff semifinalist Duce Robinson, who recorded 1,081 yards and six touchdowns.
Robinson and teammate Micahi Danzy combined for eight 100‑yard receiving games. Danzy averaged 21.2 yards per reception, ranking fourth nationally, and became only the second FSU receiver with at least three rushing and three receiving touchdowns in the same season.
Before arriving at Florida State, Harris coordinated UCF’s offense in 2024, helping the Knights finish seventh nationally in rushing and 16th in total offense. Running back RJ Harvey ranked among the national leaders in all‑purpose production, scoring and rushing.
Harris previously spent six seasons at FIU, serving as running backs coach and later offensive coordinator. During his tenure, FIU produced its best stretch in program history, including three straight bowl appearances from 2017–19 and a win over Miami in 2019.
In 2020, FIU running back D’vonte Price led the conference in yards per carry under Harris’ direction. Earlier seasons featured multiple 100‑yard rushing performances from future NFL backs Anthony Jones and Napoleon Maxwell.
Before entering college coaching, Harris led Booker T. Washington High School in Miami to a 14‑0 season, a state championship and a No. 2 national ranking in 2014. He earned multiple state and national coaching honors and previously helped the program win state titles in 2012 and 2013 as offensive coordinator.
Harris also coached track and field at Booker T. Washington, guiding the program to a state championship in 2014 and earning Miami‑Dade County Coach of the Year honors in 2013.
