(BCSNN) — Syracuse announced Tuesday that freshman wide receiver Calvin Russell III — the highest‑rated signee in program history — will miss an “indefinite period of time” after suffering an undisclosed injury during spring practice.
Russell, a 6‑foot‑6, 190‑pound standout from Miami Northwestern High School, arrived at Syracuse as ESPN’s No. 4 wide receiver and No. 36 overall prospect in the 2026 class. A two‑sport athlete, he joined the Orange men’s basketball team in January before transitioning to football for his first spring camp earlier this month.
The program has not released details on the nature or severity of the injury, and no timetable has been set for his return.
“I’m confident Calvin will return stronger because of our culture, commitment to our players and the relationships Calvin, his family and I have,” head coach Fran Brown said in a statement.
Russell was expected to make an immediate impact this fall for a Syracuse offense undergoing a major overhaul. The Orange lost their top seven receiving‑yard leaders from last season’s 3–9 campaign and rebuilt the position through the transfer portal, adding Elijah Moore (Florida State), Matt Outten (Penn State) and Cole Weaver (Miami‑Ohio).
Russell chose Syracuse over Miami and Michigan last July and signed with the Orange in December as one of two SC Next 300 recruits, alongside four‑star defensive end Kamron Wilson. He recorded 47 catches for 742 yards and eight touchdowns as a senior and appeared in one basketball game during the 2025–26 season before joining spring football.
His absence leaves Syracuse without its most dynamic incoming playmaker as Brown continues reshaping the roster and offensive identity heading into the 2026 season.
