(BCSNN) — Former Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore was sentenced Tuesday to 18 months’ probation and fined $1,000 after pleading no contest to two misdemeanor charges stemming from a December confrontation with a former staff member, the Washtenaw County Court announced.
As part of the sentence, Moore must continue mental‑health treatment, undergo drug and alcohol testing, and is prohibited from contacting the victim.
Moore pleaded no contest in March to trespassing and malicious use of a telecommunications device. Under the plea agreement, prosecutors dismissed more serious charges — including third‑degree home invasion, stalking, and breaking and entering — which carried potential felony penalties. The remaining misdemeanors each carried a maximum of six months in jail.
The case originated on Dec. 10, when Moore was arrested after an incident at the home of a former football staffer. Prosecutors alleged he entered the residence and threatened the woman with kitchen utensils. His arrest occurred just hours after Michigan terminated him for violating university policy related to an inappropriate relationship with the staffer during his two‑year tenure as head coach.
Days after Moore’s plea agreement, the accuser — identified as Paige Shiver — issued her first public statement through the Chicago‑based Action Injury Law Group. Shiver, 32, said she endured “years of manipulation, harassment, and exploitation” and argued that Michigan failed to protect its employees. Her attorneys called for a “thorough and transparent investigation” into both Moore’s conduct and any institutional shortcomings.
Shiver did not detail the nature of her relationship with Moore, though her attorney, Andrew M. Stroth, told the Detroit Free Press that Moore “took advantage of a younger, female employee.” The statement also referenced comments from athletic director Warde Manuel, who in December said the relationship violated university policy and suggested Shiver may not have been the only employee affected.
Moore’s sentencing brings a measure of resolution to a case that has hovered over Michigan’s athletic department for months. While legal proceedings have concluded, the broader questions raised by Shiver and her attorneys — including workplace protections and institutional accountability — remain under review.
