(BCSNN) -- Sad news out of Sam Houston as Bearkats football player William Davis has died suddenly, the school announced. He was 22.

No cause of death was provided, but the university described his passing as “sudden” in a release.

“It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the loss of Will Davis,” Sam Houston football coach Phil Longo said in a statement. “Will was a beloved member of our Bearkat football family here at Sam Houston who touched the lives of everyone he knew.

“Will was an upbeat, positive, passionate young man who will be sincerely missed. Tanya, the kids and I are praying for Will’s family during this difficult time.”

Davis joined the Sam Houston program ahead of spring practice after transferring from West Virginia, where he appeared in one game last season. Before that, he spent five seasons at Virginia Union, playing in 36 games with 20 starts.

In 2023, Davis recorded 38 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss and five interceptions for Virginia Union. The following year, he posted 56 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss and two interceptions before transferring to West Virginia.

Davis earned a bachelor’s degree in entrepreneurial management from Virginia Union and completed a master’s degree last year at West Virginia. He was entering his final season of eligibility.
