(BCSNN) -- Tulane football signee Deontavis Cooper has died, the school announced. He was 17.
Cooper died in a single‑vehicle crash in Florida on Saturday night, according to WCTV in Tallahassee.
“It is with a heavy heart that we share the devastating news of Deontavis Cooper’s passing, who tragically lost his life this weekend,” Tulane football said in a release. “He was a 2026 graduate of Thomas County Central High School in Thomasville, Georgia, and was set to join the football program.”
Cooper, an offensive lineman, was a three‑star prospect in the class of 2026.
Two 18‑year‑old men were also in the vehicle at the time of the crash and remain in critical condition, according to WCTV.
“As an incoming member of the Green Wave, Deontavis exemplified dedication, resilience, and a positive outlook,” the statement from Tulane continued. “His love for the game and his unwavering work ethic showed in everything he did, and he was on the path to making a significant impact both on the field and within the community.
“Deontavis was admired not only for his athletic ability but also for his kindness and genuine spirit. His bright personality and warm heart touched many, and his absence leaves a profound void in our hearts.”
Cooper was set to play for Tulane head coach Will Hall, who is entering his first season leading the Green Wave after replacing Jon Sumrall, now at Florida.
