NC State announced Wednesday that its 2026 matchup with Virginia will no longer be played in Brazil, with the game instead shifting to Charlottesville after event promoter Athlete’s Advantage informed the ACC and both schools that “the event could not be conducted.”

The decision ends what was expected to be the first FBS football game ever played in South America — an ambitious showcase that ultimately struggled to gain the traction needed to move forward.

“We are certainly disappointed that our road game vs. Virginia won’t take place in Brazil,” NC State athletic director Boo Corrigan said in a statement, “but support the decision given the circumstances. It would have been a unique cultural immersion experience for our student-athletes and we are certainly open to revisiting the opportunity in the future.”

The ACC and ESPN are still determining whether the game will remain on Aug. 29, as originally scheduled, or move to the following week, when both teams have a bye. The ACC had previously announced a 3:30 p.m. kickoff on Aug. 29, promoting the matchup as a marquee Week 0 game alongside North Carolina’s contest against TCU in Ireland.

According to NC State, fans who purchased tickets or travel packages through the official College Football Brasil website will receive refunds. “Refund administration is being coordinated through applicable ticketing, payment processing, and event partners,” the school said.

Financial fallout
NC State is owed $1.5 million from Athlete’s Advantage for a “material breach” of the participation agreement, according to the contract obtained via FOIA. The payment is due within 30 days of the cancellation notice. The Wolfpack had been set to receive $2 million for participating, plus a share of travel package revenue and sponsorship commissions.

The promoter was responsible for organizing the event, securing NCAA‑approved officials, arranging security and equipment, and coordinating cultural and promotional activities for both teams. The inability to meet those obligations — amid tepid international interest in a mid‑tier ACC matchup — ultimately forced the relocation.

A historic plan that never materialized
The game was announced in December as the first FBS contest ever played in South America and the first international game for both programs. Originally scheduled as a nonconference meeting in Charlottesville as part of a home‑and‑home series, the matchup became a league game when the ACC moved to a nine‑game conference schedule.

The shift back to Charlottesville does not significantly alter the original agreement. NC State now plays four true ACC road games instead of three road games and one neutral‑site contest.

Series history and recent results
NC State leads the all‑time series 37–21–1, winning four straight and six of the last seven. The Wolfpack defeated Virginia 35–31 last season in a Week 2 nonconference game at Carter‑Finley Stadium, rallying from a 10‑point halftime deficit. Senior defensive end Cian Slone sealed the win with an end‑zone interception on the Cavaliers’ final drive, while quarterback CJ Bailey accounted for three touchdowns.

Virginia (10–2) went on to win the ACC regular season at 7–1 and will face Duke in the ACC Championship Game on Saturday. The Cavaliers were picked 14th in the preseason poll. NC State (7–5) finished 4–4 in league play.
