(BCSNN) -- When you spend incredibly large amounts of money, you expect results. And LSU has spent so much ahead of the 2026 season, anything less than a trip to the College Football Playoff would almost seem like grand failure. Lane Kiffin, along with a $40 million roster acquired through the transfer portal, some elite retentions and a strong freshman class, all point to the Bayou Bengals making the 2026 CFP.

On paper, the Tigers look like a lock to play meaningful games come New Year’s. In reality, LSU has a legitimate path because of both the roster and the schedule.

In the first two years of the 12‑team playoff, most two‑loss power‑conference teams earned at‑large bids, especially those that reached their conference championship games. LSU’s 2026 schedule is structured in a way that makes two losses a realistic ceiling.

Five games carry heavy playoff implications:

  • Sept. 19 at Ole Miss

  • Sept. 26 vs. Texas A&M

  • Nov. 7 vs. Alabama

  • Nov. 14 vs. Texas

  • Nov. 21 at Tennessee

With those matchups anchoring the slate, LSU is projected to finish with a top‑25 strength of schedule, giving the Tigers a strong case for an at‑large bid even without an SEC Championship appearance.

LSU also opens the season with a notable non‑conference opponent: Clemson, on Sept. 5 in Baton Rouge. Clemson, like LSU, disappointed last season, but head coach Dabo Swinney aggressively hit the transfer portal and is expected to rebound — a boost to LSU’s résumé.

In total, LSU faces three teams that made last year’s playoff, plus Texas, which narrowly missed the cut but had a roster capable of a deep run. The Longhorns are an early preseason favorite for 2026.

If LSU escapes with only two losses, it will have multiple wins over playoff‑caliber teams. That matters. Beating postseason teams demonstrates that once the tournament begins in December, LSU can make a run and compensate for any blemishes.

There is precedent. In 2024, Ohio State won the national championship with two regular‑season losses — one to Oregon, whom the Buckeyes later beat in the playoff, and another close loss to Michigan.

Additionally, if Louisiana State reaches the SEC Championship Game, it would strengthen its seeding and provide another high‑level test before the postseason.

Even if LSU stumbles, the Tigers appear well‑positioned to atone for any losses once the playoff begins - which let's be real, the Tigers are going to make.
