(BCSNN) -- Georgia running back Dante Dowdell is recovering from serious injuries after an ATV accident near his home in Picayune, Mississippi, head coach Kirby Smart said Tuesday.

Dowdell, who transferred to Georgia from Kentucky earlier this offseason, was taken to Shepherd Center in Atlanta, a nationally recognized rehabilitation hospital specializing in spinal cord and brain injuries. Smart said the senior back is “out of the really tough range,” but emphasized that the full extent of his recovery — and whether he will play this season — remains uncertain.

Smart described the accident as involving a recreational vehicle and noted that details remain limited. “He’s injured. We don’t know when his return will be,” Smart said. “I don’t know the specifics of it, to be honest with you.”

Dowdell was expected to be a key rotational piece behind returning starter Nate Frazier. Last season at Kentucky, he rushed for 560 yards and three touchdowns. He previously played at Oregon in 2023 and Nebraska in 2024, where he posted 614 yards and 12 touchdowns in his lone season with the Cornhuskers.

Smart said Georgia players have already visited Dowdell in the hospital and that the program is supporting his family through the recovery process. “He’s a tremendous kid with a great family,” Smart said. “It’s a really tough deal.”

Georgia has not released a timeline for Dowdell’s return, and the team is expected to adjust its running back depth chart as preseason camp approaches.
