(BCSNN) — Eastern Michigan makes its first road trip of the 2026 season Saturday, and although the Eagles won’t travel far, the challenge ahead looms large. EMU heads north to East Lansing for a 3:30 p.m. matchup at Michigan State, looking to rebound from a 27–21 loss to San José State while the Spartans aim to build on their 30–20 win over Toledo.

The intrastate meeting marks EMU’s first non‑conference road game against a Michigan opponent since 2014 — also at Spartan Stadium — and opens a demanding stretch in which the Eagles face back‑to‑back Big Ten foes in Michigan State and Wisconsin. Saturday’s broadcast airs on the Big Ten Network, with radio coverage on WEMU 89.1 FM and streaming platforms.

Eastern Michigan enters the week fresh off a historic milestone. With its season‑opening win over Sacramento State, EMU became the 111th FBS program to reach 500 all‑time victories, now standing at 500‑638‑47 in its 135th varsity season. The program, founded in 1891 as Michigan State Normal School, has played at least two games every year except 1944.

Road openers, however, have long been a hurdle. EMU is 38‑116‑8 all‑time in its first road game of the season and last won one in 2024 at UMass. Saturday also marks the Eagles’ 26th first road game against a Power 4 opponent, a slate in which EMU is 2–23, with memorable wins at Rutgers (2017) and Purdue (2018). The Eagles have faced Big Ten teams in 16 of those games, including each of the last four.

The matchup also continues a unique run of scheduling quirks. EMU opened the season with back‑to‑back California opponents, then faces back‑to‑back Spartans — San José State last week and Michigan State this week — followed by back‑to‑back road games against Big Ten opponents. Later in the season, EMU will play both Michigan MAC schools in consecutive weeks.

Saturday’s game is the first of three EMU will play against Michigan opponents this season, with Central Michigan and Western Michigan looming in November. Historically, Eastern has played 467 games against Michigan‑based teams, including high schools and military squads, posting a 203‑238‑26 record. Against collegiate institutions alone, EMU is 167‑216‑20.

Under head coach Chris Creighton, Eastern Michigan has enjoyed notable non‑conference success. Since 2014, EMU has won 25 non‑conference games, including nine road victories, highlighted by wins at Rutgers, Purdue, Illinois and Arizona State. Creighton’s teams have averaged two non‑conference wins per season.

Michigan State enters the contest 1–0 after a strong debut under head coach Pat Fitzgerald. Quarterback Alessio Milivojevic threw for 247 yards and a touchdown against Toledo, while Rodney Bullard Jr. caught seven passes for 90 yards. Running back Cam Edwards added 98 yards and a score, and kicker Liam Boyd drilled five field goals, including a 51‑yarder late.

The Eagles are 0–10 all‑time against Michigan State, including 0–8 in East Lansing, where the last seven meetings have been played. The most recent matchup came in 2014, a 73–14 Spartans win. EMU’s series with MSU dates back to 1898, when the teams met in a Michigan Intercollegiate Conference game.

Eastern Michigan also carries a notable historical footnote into Saturday: between 2017 and 2019, the Eagles became one of only three MAC programs to win three straight road games against Big Ten opponents, defeating Rutgers, Purdue and Illinois in consecutive seasons — each on a late scoring drive capped by a game‑winning field goal.

EMU will look to channel that history, steady itself after last week’s loss, and attempt to break through against a familiar in‑state foe.
