BCSNN — Rutgers entered Friday night needing not just a win, but reassurance. After a 1–3 start and rising questions about whether the Scarlet Knights could deliver a complete performance against an FCS opponent, Rutgers responded with its most dominant outing of the season, defeating Howard 58–7 at SHI Stadium and giving head coach Greg Schiano his 100th career victory at the school.

The win brought visible relief across the program. Rutgers scored 41 first‑half points, posted 534 yards of offense, allowed no sacks, and produced explosive plays on both sides of the ball. It was the type of game the Scarlet Knights needed — and the type of game many wondered if they could produce.

Running back Antwan Raymond powered the offense with 140 rushing yards and three touchdowns, becoming the 17th player in Rutgers history to surpass 2,000 career rushing yards. It was his third straight 100‑yard game and the eighth of his career, tying him for 11th all‑time in program history.

Wide receiver KJ Duff Jr. added another milestone night, catching five passes for 131 yards and a touchdown. His performance pushed him past 2,000 career receiving yards, making him the 11th Scarlet Knight to reach the mark. Duff also became the first player in program history to catch a touchdown in five consecutive games.

Quarterback Dylan Lonergan delivered one of his most efficient outings, completing 12 of 17 passes for 214 yards and two touchdowns. His 77‑yard strike to Duff in the first quarter came one play after Bradlee Jones recorded the first of his two interceptions, setting the tone for a night in which Rutgers controlled every phase.

Rutgers led 21–7 after the first quarter, scoring on three straight drives. Raymond’s 18‑yard touchdown run capped the opening surge, and Howard’s lone score of the night came late in the period. From there, Rutgers tightened its grip.

Jones’ second interception early in the second quarter set up a 29‑yard field goal from Dane Pizzaro, who went 3‑for‑3 on field goals, including a career‑long 47‑yarder. Raymond added his second and third touchdowns before halftime, pushing Rutgers to a commanding 41–7 lead.

The Scarlet Knights continued to dominate after the break. Running back Clay Thevenin muscled in a four‑yard touchdown in the third quarter, and Pizzaro added a 40‑yard field goal to extend the lead to 51–7. Backup quarterback AJ Surace led a quick fourth‑quarter scoring drive, finding Vernon Allen III for a nine‑yard touchdown.

Defensively, Rutgers produced a season‑high four sacks, improving to 36–7 under Schiano when reaching that mark. Linebacker Moses Walker recorded five tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss, while defensive lineman Keshon Griffin added a strip sack recovered by DJ Allen. Jones’ two interceptions marked the second multi‑pick game by a Scarlet Knight this season.

The win also marked Rutgers’ seventh straight victory over Howard, and its 10th game scoring 50 or more points under Schiano. The Scarlet Knights posted their highest first‑half scoring output since 2015 and recorded both a 100‑yard rusher and 100‑yard receiver for the second time this season.

Schiano’s milestone places him among elite company. He joins Kirk Ferentz, Dabo Swinney, Troy Calhoun, and Kirby Smart as the only active FBS coaches with 100 wins at their current school.

Rutgers now turns its attention to a far tougher challenge: hosting No. 5 Indiana next Saturday for Homecoming and Family Weekend. After a week filled with questions, Friday’s performance provided the response the Scarlet Knights needed — and a foundation they must carry into October.
