BCSNN — Auburn has dismissed star linebacker Xavier Atkins from the football program, ending the tenure of one of the Tigers’ top defensive playmakers and creating a significant void in the middle of Auburn’s defense heading into the second half of the season.
Atkins’ status had been in question since last week, when head coach Alex Golesh announced the linebacker had been suspended ahead of Auburn’s eventual victory over then‑No. 1 Georgia. At the time, Golesh declined to provide details about the suspension, saying only that the matter would be handled internally.
Questions about Atkins’ future intensified Monday when Golesh told reporters the program was “still working through it.” Later that evening, multiple reports indicated that Auburn had moved forward with dismissing Atkins from the team.
The departure marks a major loss for the Tigers. Atkins entered the 2026 season as one of Auburn’s most accomplished returning defenders after earning first‑team All‑SEC honors in 2025. He led the conference with 17 tackles for loss last season and was widely viewed as one of the SEC’s premier linebackers.
Atkins’ 2025 campaign established him as the centerpiece of Auburn’s defense. He paced the Tigers with 84 tackles and nine sacks, becoming one of the most disruptive front‑seven players in the league. His production earned preseason All‑SEC recognition from the conference’s coaches entering this season.
Despite appearing in only four games for Auburn in 2026, Atkins remained a highly productive contributor. He recorded 37 tackles, three sacks and an interception, helping anchor a defense that has been among the SEC’s most physical units through the first half of the season.
Auburn’s coaching staff will now be tasked with replacing not only Atkins’ production, but also his experience and leadership. Few defenders on the roster have matched his ability to generate pressure, create negative plays and impact games from sideline to sideline.
Atkins originally began his collegiate career at LSU before transferring to Auburn. He remained with the Tigers through the coaching transition from Hugh Freeze to Alex Golesh following the 2025 season and quickly became one of the program’s most recognizable defensive players.
The timing of the dismissal is particularly notable given Auburn’s recent momentum. The Tigers are coming off a statement victory over top‑ranked Georgia and remain firmly in contention in a competitive SEC race. Losing one of the conference’s most productive linebackers creates a challenge as the schedule intensifies.
As a third‑year player, Atkins would be eligible to enter the NFL Draft should he choose to leave school. His future plans have not been publicly announced.
For Auburn, the focus now shifts toward adjusting without one of its most accomplished defenders. For Atkins, a collegiate career that included All‑SEC honors and some of the nation’s top defensive statistics takes an unexpected turn.
