West Virginia will open the 2025 college football season with its first-ever matchup against FCS opponent Robert Morris. The matchup between first-time opponents is scheduled for Aug. 30 at 2 p.m. from Milan Puskar Stadium (ESPN+).
The first game of the new Rich Rodriguez era at WVU will see the Mountaineers try to extend their perfect 25-0 record against FCS opponents.
The Colonials fared well in their return to the Northeast Conference last season, finishing 7-5 overall and 4-2 in league play. After dropping its first two contests, RMU won six of its next seven games during a mid-season hot streak.
With starting quarterback Anthony Chiccitt transferring to Temple, RMU’s starting job will be decided by a battle between redshirt junior Zach Tanner and Harvard graduate transfer Ameer Dudley. Tenner threw for 453 yards and four touchdowns in limited action last season.
The Colonials ran for over 1,400 yards last season, but return none of their top rushers. Instead, RMU will see a mix of UMass transfer Donta Whack, Eastern Michigan transfer Owen McGraw, who will also play receiver, and returners Taj Dyches and Ethan Shine.
It’s a similar situation at receiver, where RMU returns very little production from 2024. Tight end Chaz Middleton was named to the All-NEC preseason team after catching seven passes for 80 yards and two touchdowns last year. The Colonials also have former Mountaineer Tyler Evans at receiver, as well as Ball State transfer RJ Mukes.
RMU features a number of Division I transfers on what will be a rebuilt defense.
Defensive lineman Okechukwu Egbuziem (South Dakota), linebackers Jakari Patterson (Austin Peay), Eldrick Robinson (Wake Forest), Jyree Roberts (UMass), cornerback Shafeek Smith (Towson) and safeties Noel Roach (Akron) and Elijah Davis (Ball State) all joined the Colonials this offseason.
RMU’s top returners on defense are lineman Trey Woods (28 tackles, 3.5 sacks in 2024), linebacker Patrick McDonnell (19 tackles) and defensive back Tasheen Howard (11 tackles, three pass breakups). Howard was also an All-NEC punt returner last season.
The Colonials were picked to finish third in the NEC Preseason Poll, garnering one first-place vote.
