The historical dominance of WVU Rifle

By Jebediah Frame, Staff Writer Oct 28, 2026, The Daily Anthem

The rifle program is one of WVU's most historic and successful sports. Boasting 21 championships to its name, it’s a story of dominance that is unparalleled by any other program in the country.

WVU’s first championship came in 1983 under head coach Edward Etzel. WVU beat Tennessee Tech, a team that had previously beaten them in the championship three years in a row, by 18 points.

Etzel went on to win three more championships with WVU’s rifle program in 1984, 1986, and 1989, respectively.

In 1990, a new head coach stepped into the picture: Marsha Beasley.

Beasley had an immediate impact, leading the program to a championship in her first year and carrying that momentum forward for several years.

She led WVU to four championships in her first four seasons in charge. Her streak was only broken by a second-place finish to Alaska-Fairbanks in 1994.

Following the second-place finish, WVU won another four championships in a row between 1995-98.

Beasley catapulted WVU into a new level of dominance, and remained with the program until 2006, though the rifle team didn’t win another championship under her tenure.

However, she set the team up for success under a new head coach: Jon Hammond.

Hammond took over the head coaching position in 2006, following Beasley’s departure. He is still coaching WVU to this day.

Hammond won his first championship with WVU in 2009, marking WVU’s return to its historical prowess.

WVU took a second-place finish in 2011, before beginning the best run in program history in 2013.

From 2013-19, Hammond led the program to five consecutive championships and two second-place finishes.

Following the COVID cancellation, a few other programs, like Kentucky and TCU, stepped into the spotlight with championships of their own, but none rivaled the dominance of WVU in the 2010s.

Still, WVU had work to be done.

In 2025 and 2026, the WVU rifle program catapulted itself back into dominant form, winning championships again.

Now, with plenty of season left to play, WVU is No. 1 in the rifle rankings.

Hammond and the team will strive to recreate another three-peat for a historic WVU program.
