The Miami University hockey team closed out its first series of the 2022-23 season decisively, taking a 4-1 win over Ferris State on Sunday afternoon at Steve "Coach" Cady Arena.

The RedHawks (1-0-1) spread their goals across all three periods, while holding the Bulldogs (0-1-1) to a single score in the second. Ludvig Persson made 30 saves to earn the victory in net for Miami.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • 3:38 1st (Miami 1-0) | The RedHawks came out aggressively, taking the lead less than four minutes into the contest. A series of shots on goal for Miami put Red Savage in control, with Savage passing across the Bulldogs' zone to Hampus Rydqvist. Rydqvist gathered the puck in and maneuvered it toward the back post to set up Jack Olmstead for the game's opening goal.
  • 12:00 1st (Miami 2-0) | Max Dukovac took a rebound off a shot on goal and made a pass to Rydqvist, who brought the puck behind Ferris State's goal and maneuvered around the defense to land just in front of the net. Matthew Barbolini took advantage and knocked in it home to double the advantage for the Red and White.
  • 10:16 2nd (Ferris State 2-1) | The Bulldogs rallied during a power play opportunity to get on the board midway through the second period. Brenden MacLaren and Luke Farthing passed between each other looking for an opening in Miami's zone before Farthing sent the puck to Stepan Pokorny for the score.
  • 12:15 2nd (Miami 3-1) | A series of roughing penalties whistled directly following Ferris State's goal put the RedHawks on the advantage, with Joe Cassetti capitalizing just under two minutes later. Cassetti chipped a faceoff win over to Dukovac, who made a pass backward to Dylan Moulton. When Moulton's shot was knocked away, Cassetti was there waiting to finish past Noah Giesbrecht for a 3-1 lead with only one second remaining on the power play.
  • 1:07 3rd (Miami 4-1) | The RedHawks took a major penalty less than 30 seconds into the third period, putting them on the defensive. Soon after, PJ Fletcher intercepted the puck at the RedHawks' blue line and slid it ahead past three Bulldogs to Red Savage, who grabbed the breakaway shorthanded goal to close out the scoring.
