Vice President/Director of Athletics Fernando Lovo praised Eck’s immediate impact. “Keeping Coach Eck at UNM was incredibly important to us,” Lovo said. “He brought belief back into our program, united our community, and raised the standard for what New Mexico Football can be.”
Eck’s debut season has been one of the most memorable in program history. The Lobos recorded their first sellout crowd since 2007, defeated UCLA for their first-ever win over a Big Ten opponent, and snapped long droughts against Air Force and Colorado State. UNM finished tied for first place in the Mountain West after beating San Diego State in front of 30,575 fans, the largest crowd in 17 years.
Beyond the field, Eck has boosted UNM’s national visibility with viral social media appearances, including parodies of The Office and Gone in 60 Seconds, and his celebrated ride in Albuquerque lowriders. Engagement metrics for the program have reached unprecedented levels.
Eck surpassed Gwinn Henry’s 1934 mark for most wins by a first-year Lobo coach, earning his ninth victory against San Diego State. He became the first coach in program history to achieve bowl eligibility in his debut season, with UNM posting its seventh eight-win campaign since World War II.
According to KFord Ratings, UNM ranked No. 1 nationally in total wins over preseason projections, despite returning the fewest players in the FBS and welcoming the second-most newcomers.
“My family and I immediately felt welcomed and supported by the Albuquerque community,” Eck said. “We love it here, and we believe New Mexico Football can be a perennial Mountain West contender. We are excited to keep the momentum going by signing this contract extension. Lobo Up!”
UNM President Garnett S. Stokes praised Eck’s leadership. “Coach Eck has elevated our program on the field, in the classroom, and in the community, and he has done it with integrity and a deep commitment to our student-athletes,” Stokes said.
The contract includes an initial $400,000 increase in guaranteed compensation, with $100,000 annual raises, plus new incentives tied to wins, victories over Power-4 or ranked opponents, and conference championship appearances. UNM’s bowl destination will be announced Dec. 7.
