Senior Andrew Jones tallied a team-high 13 points to lead No. 17/17 Texas (8-2) to a 60-53 win against Stanford (6-4) on Sunday afternoon in the Pac-12 U.S. LBM Coast-to-Coast Challenge at T-Mobile Arena. Defense proved to be the key to the victory, as the Longhorns forced 22 turnovers and posted a 23-11 advantage in points off turnovers.

Senior Timmy Allen registered 11 points (5-11 FG), five rebounds and three steals. Junior Dylan Disu added 11 points while converting 5-of-7 field goals (1-of-2 threes), four rebounds, one steal and one blocked shot in 16 minutes.

After a Marcus Carr layup gave Texas a 11-8 advantage at the 13:42 mark, the Cardinal responded with a 9-2 run over the next four minutes to grab a 17-13 lead following a Jaiden Delaire three-point play with 8:45 remaining. Leading 27-26 after a Delaire layup at the 4:13 mark, the Longhorns closed the half with a 7-1 spurt to take a 34-27 advantage into the break.

Texas increased its cushion to 38-29 following an Allen jumper with 17:20 left, but the Cardinal responded with four straight points to trim the margin to 38-33 after a Harrison Ingram layup at the 15:15 mark. The Longhorns immediately answered with a 13-0 run over the next four minutes to seize control of the contest and build a 51-33 advantage following a Courtney Ramey three-pointer with 11:21 remaining.

Carr converted a jumper to give Texas a 60-47 lead with 47 seconds remaining, before Stanford closed the game by scoring the final six points.

Team Notes

  • Texas improved to 4-2 in the all-time series against the Cardinal. This marked the first meeting between the two schools since the 2015-16 season.
  • This marked the first neutral-site contest of the year for the Longhorns.
