(BCSNN) — Ethan Sanchez drilled a 24-yard field goal in overtime to lift Houston past Oregon State, 27–24, on Friday night at Reser Stadium. The Cougars erased a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit to hand the Beavers their third loss of the season at home and fifth overall.
Oregon State (0-5) led 24–10 early in the fourth after Cornell Hatcher Jr. capped a 12-play, 80-yard drive with an 18-yard touchdown run. But Houston (4-0, 2-0 Away) responded with back-to-back scoring drives, including a 50-yard touchdown pass from Conner Weigman to Tanner Koziol with 51 seconds left to force overtime.
Weigman finished with three total touchdowns—two passing and one rushing—while Sanchez went 2-for-2 on field goals and 3-for-3 on extra points.
The Beavers opened strong, scoring on their first two possessions. Jake Reichle punched in a 1-yard touchdown run, and Maalik Murphy found Marquis Crosby for a 5-yard score to make it 14–0. Murphy threw for 201 yards and a touchdown, while Trent Walker led all receivers with 103 yards on six catches.
Caleb Ojeda added a 31-yard field goal in the third quarter, and Hatcher’s fourth-quarter score appeared to seal the win before Houston’s late surge.
Oregon State will look to regroup before facing Washington State on Oct. 4. Houston returns home to host UAB in Week 6. As for the Coogs, Houston returns to TDECU Stadium undefeated for a meeting with #12/14 Texas Tech on Saturday, Oct. 4.
