(BCSNN) -- Good news if you're a Canes fan, because Miami coach Mario Cristobal plans to remain at his alma mater for a long time. Entering his fifth season leading the Hurricanes, Cristobal confirmed Tuesday that he has agreed to a “long‑term” contract extension, as first reported by On3.

“I’m honored that the administration has that type of faith in me,” Cristobal said on The Joe Rose Show on WQAM. “But we’re doing a lot of great things, and more things to come.”

Cristobal originally signed a 10‑year contract when he took over the program before the 2022 season, a deal worth a reported $8 million per year through 2031. According to On3, the new agreement also includes a substantial donation from Cristobal to the university.

A former Hurricanes offensive lineman who won two national titles as a player, Cristobal inherited a rebuilding project. Miami went 5–7 in his first season, then improved to 7–6 and 10–3 over the next two years.

Last season, Miami delivered its breakthrough. The Hurricanes finished the regular season 10–2, earned their first‑ever College Football Playoff berth, and won three straight postseason games to reach the national championship for the first time since 2002. Miami fell to Indiana in the title game.

Cristobal holds a 35–19 record through four seasons at Miami and is 97–79 overall in 14 seasons as a head coach at UM, Oregon and FIU.

The extension signals Miami’s intention to maintain stability and momentum as the program continues its climb back into the national spotlight. Maybe it's finally safe to say, "The U is back."
