(BCSNN.com) — Clemson’s first regular‑season win in the state of California proved historic on multiple fronts, as the Tigers shut down Cal’s offense and controlled a late‑night Friday matchup to even the all‑time series at 1-1. The 10:35 p.m. ET kickoff marked Clemson’s latest start in its home time zone since a 1982 game played in Tokyo, but the Tigers handled the unusual circumstances with ease in a 21-10 victory.

Clemson (now 1-1 on the road this season) improved to 35‑24‑5 all‑time in Friday games, including 28‑18‑5 in Friday regular‑season contests. Under head coach Dabo Swinney, the Tigers are now 4-1 in Friday regular‑season games, adding Cal to a list that includes Boston College, Syracuse and Louisville. Clemson has now won Friday games in back‑to‑back seasons for the first time since 1938-39.

The Tigers’ defensive performance anchored the win. Clemson did not allow Cal to score an offensive touchdown, marking its first such effort since 2022 at Boston College. Cal entered the week ranked 13th nationally in passing yards per game, but Clemson held the Golden Bears to 145 passing yards, including a career‑low 119 yards for quarterback Jaron‑Keawe Sagapolutele.

Clemson has now held back‑to‑back opponents under 150 passing yards for the first time since 2023 and back‑to‑back ACC opponents under that mark for the first time since 2020. Cornerback Elliot Washington II led the defensive charge with two interceptions, becoming the first Clemson player with multiple picks in a game since 2025 and extending his streak to interceptions in consecutive games.

Offensively, Clemson leaned on its ground game, rushing for a season‑high 255 yards, its first 200‑yard rushing performance of the year. Running back Gideon Davidson delivered a breakout night with 159 rushing yards, 22 carries, and two touchdowns, becoming the first Clemson player with consecutive 100‑yard rushing games since 2024. His 75‑yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter was Clemson’s longest since 2024 and capped a 98‑yard scoring drive.

Quarterback Tait Reynolds completed 13 of 21 passes for 108 yards and added 28 rushing yards. With the win, Reynolds joined Deshaun Watson and Trevor Lawrence as the only Clemson true freshmen to start 2-0 since permanent freshman eligibility began in 1972. Clemson is now 22-15 in games started by true freshman quarterbacks.

Clemson led 10-7 at halftime and 17-10 after three quarters, continuing its dominance when playing from ahead. Under Swinney, the Tigers are now 163-12 when leading at halftime and 153-7 when leading after three quarters since 2011. Overall, Clemson is 169-10 when ahead entering the fourth quarter during Swinney’s tenure.

The Tigers also added a special teams spark when Bryant Wesco Jr. returned a punt 65 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter, Clemson’s first punt return score since 2018. Clemson is now 6-0 under Swinney when returning a punt for a touchdown and 9-2 when scoring any special teams touchdown.

Kicker Nolan Hauser passed David Treadwell for ninth in Clemson’s career kick‑scoring list with a 30‑yard field goal in the second quarter. That score extended Clemson’s streak to 311 consecutive games without being shut out, tying Oklahoma (1998-2022) for the 10th‑longest streak in FBS history.

Defensively, Clemson recorded sacks from London Merritt, Jeremiah Alexander, and Champ Thompson, while Ashton Hampton tied his career high with three pass breakups. Running back Jarvis Green added career highs with seven carries for 31 yards, and wide receiver T.J. Moore extended his streak of consecutive games with a reception to 31.

The win also marked Clemson’s first conference game played on the West Coast and its fourth all‑time contest in California, joining previous trips to Pacific (1951), USC (1966), and the 2018 national championship game in Santa Clara. Cal became the 19th different program Clemson has faced in ACC play.

Swinney’s milestone night added historical weight to the victory. With the win, he reached 190 career victories, joining Tom Osborne, Nick Saban and Bob Stoops as the only FBS coaches to reach 190 wins within their first 20 seasons. Swinney accomplished the feat in just 19 seasons - and only 18 full seasons.

Clemson now turns its attention to the remainder of ACC play, having extended its conference road winning streak to four games and improved to 85-14 against ACC opponents since 2015.
