BCSNN — No. 7 Alabama walked into its first ranked matchup of the season and walked out with one of the most overwhelming road wins in SEC history, steamrolling No. 16 Mississippi State 56–23 on Saturday afternoon inside Davis Wade Stadium. The Crimson Tide scored touchdowns in all four quarters, forced four turnovers, and looked every bit like a team rounding into championship form.
Alabama (5–0, 3–0 SEC) piled up 483 yards of offense, reaching the 50‑point mark for the second time this season and scoring at least 45 points for the fifth straight game — a feat the program has achieved only once before, in 2018. Quarterback Keelon Russell delivered his sharpest performance yet, totaling 301 yards of offense and four touchdowns, including 285 passing yards on 16‑of‑22 accuracy and a 17‑yard scoring scramble.
Two Tide playmakers found the end zone twice: freshman running back Trae’shawn Brown, who rushed for 66 yards and two scores, and wideout Rico Scott, who hauled in a pair of touchdown receptions. Six Alabama receivers caught multiple passes, led by Lotzeir Brooks, who posted 96 yards on four receptions.
But Alabama’s defense was the story early, setting the tone with a pair of first‑quarter takeaways. On Mississippi State’s opening possession, London Simmons forced and recovered a fumble, leading to a six‑play touchdown drive capped by Russell’s 15‑yard strike to Ryan Coleman‑Williams. Just three plays later, Dijon Lee Jr. jumped a pass and returned it 30 yards for a pick‑six, giving Alabama a 14–0 lead before the Bulldogs could settle in.
Mississippi State (4–1, 2–1 SEC) briefly steadied itself with a 12‑play touchdown drive, but Alabama responded immediately. Russell opened the second quarter with a 17‑yard touchdown run, and after MSU capitalized on an Alabama fumble, Brown powered in from seven yards out to restore a two‑score lead. The Bulldogs added a late field goal to make it 28–17 at halftime, but Alabama’s dominance was already evident.
The Tide opened the second half with another 75‑yard touchdown march, capped by Scott’s 13‑yard reception. Moments later, Caleb Woodson intercepted Kamario Taylor, and Brown scored his second touchdown of the day to push the lead to 42–17. Mississippi State answered with a 45‑yard touchdown pass, but Alabama’s defense stopped the two‑point try, and the Bulldogs never threatened again.
Alabama closed the game with two more touchdown drives — a Scott eight‑yard score and a three‑yard run by Austin Mack — completing a stretch in which the Tide scored touchdowns on their final six possessions. Alabama has now scored on every completed drive of a half three times this season.
Freshman linebacker Xavier Griffin led the defense with nine tackles and a sack, while Simmons posted 1.5 sacks and 1.5 tackles for loss as part of Alabama’s season‑high five sacks and nine TFLs. The Tide held Mississippi State to 18 rushing yards, marking the fourth time in five games they have allowed fewer than 100 on the ground.
The win extended Alabama’s dominance in the series: the Tide now hold an 89–17–3 advantage and have beaten Mississippi State 17 straight times dating back to 2007. It also marked the most points ever scored by a visiting ranked team in regulation in SEC history.
Head coach Kalen DeBoer continued his remarkable run against ranked opponents. Since 2021, he has 21 wins over AP Top 25 teams — second among active coaches — and is now 10–2 on the road against ranked foes in his FBS career. In ranked‑on‑ranked matchups, DeBoer improved to 17–5.
Alabama’s defense has now forced 12 turnovers through five games, the program’s most since 2019, and has returned four interceptions for touchdowns, the most in the FBS. The Tide have scored 66 points off turnovers and 25 off turnovers on downs.
Coleman‑Williams’ touchdown extended his streak to three straight games, tying him with Alabama legend Ozzie Newsome for ninth on the program’s all‑time receiving touchdown list. Brown and Scott each recorded their first career multi‑touchdown games.
Alabama returns home next Saturday for a massive showdown with No. 2 Georgia at Bryant‑Denny Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. CT on ABC.
