BCSNN — Troy delivered one of the most explosive offensive performances in program history Tuesday night, rolling past Southern Miss 55–34 at Veterans Memorial Stadium behind a staggering 662 total yards and a ground attack that overwhelmed the Golden Eagles from start to finish. The Trojans’ 437 rushing yards marked the highest regular‑season total on a Tuesday since 1995 and powered Troy to a 3–2 start and a 1–0 mark in Sun Belt play.
For the first time ever, Troy featured two 130‑plus‑yard rushers in the same game. Quarterback Goose Crowder led the way with 145 yards on 17 carries and two rushing touchdowns, while running back Jordan Lovett added 142 yards on 12 attempts and a score. Crowder also turned in one of the most efficient passing performances of his career, completing 18 of 21 throws (86%) for 225 yards and two touchdowns.
Troy was perfect in the red zone, converting all eight opportunities, improving its season mark to 16‑for‑17 and continuing one of the most reliable scoring trends in the conference.
The Trojans set the tone immediately after winning the toss and electing to receive. Troy marched 75 yards in 10 plays, rushing nine times before Lovett punched in a 15‑yard touchdown. A 34‑yard field goal from Ethan Head made it 10–0, and Crowder’s 9‑yard touchdown run capped a dominant first quarter with Troy ahead 17–0.
Southern Miss responded early in the second quarter with a 12‑play, 75‑yard touchdown drive, as quarterback Landry Lyddy found Mario Sanders for a two‑yard score. But Troy answered quickly. Crowder’s second rushing touchdown made it 24–7, and moments later Kavion Henderson intercepted Lyddy to halt another Golden Eagle drive.
Crowder capitalized again, connecting with Nick Hampton for a five‑yard touchdown to push the lead to 31–7 at halftime. Troy outgained Southern Miss 362–178 in the first half and scored on all five possessions.
Southern Miss opened the third quarter with a burst of trick‑play creativity, as Sanders threw a 75‑yard touchdown pass to cut the deficit to 31–13. But Troy responded instantly. Crowder hit Lovett for a 46‑yard touchdown — Troy’s sixth straight scoring possession — restoring a comfortable margin.
The Trojans’ defense continued to deliver timely stops. Jabari Strait intercepted Eelijah Singleton after Troy sniffed out another trick play, setting up another scoring opportunity. Sanders, however, continued his standout night, adding a 27‑yard touchdown reception — his third score of the game — to keep Southern Miss within striking distance.
Head’s second field goal extended Troy’s lead to 41–20, but Southern Miss answered with a 44‑yard touchdown run by Robert Briggs, trimming the margin to 41–27 entering the fourth quarter.
Troy’s run game closed the door from there. Jaheim Merriweather powered in his fourth touchdown of the season, and after Southern Miss added its final score, Gavin Griffin sealed the win with a 12‑yard touchdown run — making him the fourth Trojan to score on the ground.
Troy finished with four rushing touchdowns, two passing touchdowns, and points on nine of its 11 drives. The Trojans’ offensive line controlled the game throughout, paving the way for one of the most dominant rushing performances in modern program history.
Troy now turns its attention to a road matchup at Louisiana (4–1, 1–0) on Oct. 18, looking to build on its explosive start to conference play.
