BCSNN — Iowa leaned on a punishing ground attack, a poised first‑time starter at quarterback and a suffocating defensive front to defeat Washington 41–24 on a rainy Friday night at Husky Stadium. The Hawkeyes rolled up 465 yards of offense, rushed for 263 yards, and held the Huskies to minus‑4 rushing yards while recording six sacks in their first regular‑season West Coast victory since 1965.
Third‑year quarterback Jeremy Hecklinski, making his first career start, completed 14 of 19 passes for 202 yards and three touchdowns, posting a 215.1 passer rating. He connected with DJ Vonnahme twice in the second quarter and found Reece Vander Zee in the third, becoming the fourth Iowa quarterback in the Kirk Ferentz era to throw three touchdowns in his debut.
The night belonged to running back Kamari Moulton, who delivered a career‑best performance with 208 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries. Moulton broke loose for a 56‑yard touchdown late in the first quarter and added a three‑yard score in the fourth, becoming the first Hawkeye to surpass 200 yards in a game since 2024. He piled up 97 yards in the first quarter alone and crossed the 100‑yard mark on his first carry of the second.
Iowa built a 27–0 lead before Washington found the scoreboard. Caden Buhr opened the game with field goals of 51 and 27 yards, the first marking his initial make from 50‑plus. Moulton’s long touchdown run extended the margin, and Hecklinski’s two scoring strikes to Vonnahme pushed the advantage to four touchdowns midway through the second quarter.
Washington trimmed the deficit with a late field goal to make it 27–3 at halftime, but Iowa’s defense had already set the tone. The Hawkeyes limited the Huskies to 14 total yards and one first down in the first quarter and held them under 100 yards until their final possession of the half. Iowa outgained Washington 279–109 before the break.
The Huskies opened the second half with a 10‑yard touchdown pass from Elijah Brown to Chris Lawson, but Iowa answered immediately. Hecklinski found Vander Zee for an eight‑yard touchdown to restore a 34–10 lead. Vander Zee finished with three catches for a career‑high 69 yards and his third touchdown of the season.
Washington added a two‑yard touchdown pass late in the third quarter, but Iowa’s ground game continued to control the tempo. Moulton’s second touchdown early in the fourth quarter pushed the lead to 38–18, and Buhr’s fifth extra point capped Iowa’s scoring. The Huskies added a touchdown on the final play to account for the 41–24 final.
Defensively, Xavier Styles led Iowa with nine tackles in his first career start. Cam Buffington and Jayden Montgomery added eight tackles each, while Buffington and Preston Ries recorded two sacks apiece. Montgomery and Bryce Hawthorne each added one, contributing to Iowa’s nine tackles for loss and season‑high sack total.
The win extended several Iowa trends. The Hawkeyes have now won four straight Friday games and 14 of their last 16 Friday contests since 2015. They have also won their last five games following their first loss in each of the past five seasons.
Offensively, Iowa surpassed 40 points for the third time in six games, the first time the program has done so in 15 years. The Hawkeyes’ 263 rushing yards marked their third 200‑plus‑yard performance of the season and their best output against a Power Five opponent this year. Under offensive coordinator Tim Lester, Iowa is 15–1 when rushing for at least 200 yards.
The Hawkeyes also posted 465 total yards, their highest total in a Big Ten game under Lester and fourth‑highest overall during his tenure. Hecklinski’s debut continued Iowa’s strong track record with backup quarterbacks making first starts; the Hawkeyes are now 8–1 in such games since 2006.
Washington’s loss was just its second in its last 12 non‑Saturday home games since 2010.
Iowa enters its idle week on Oct. 17 before returning to action Oct. 24 at Minnesota.
